Familiarity vs prevention. [Dec. 4th, 2008|08:04 pm]

[mood | geeky]
[music |Wrath of the Lich King Soundtrack - Mountains of Thunder]

After an issue with my primary mouse (the right button only worked most of the time, it must be faulty) turned into an issue with my backup mouse (the right button only worked most of the time, my hand may be faulty), I've invested in an ergonomic mouse, namely the Evoluent VerticalMouse 3. And early reports suggest that yes, it's indeed my hand at fault (but no longer).

I have to say, it really looks odd sitting next to the keyboard. And I'm currently going through a period of adjustment that's to be expected after over a decade of using a conventional mouse - I currently just have one habit to break (namely using my ring finger to go 'back' when browsing, and thumb to go 'forward), and I'm still finding what method of holding the mouse is more comfortable.

TelstraClear cable is getting closer to available; I've had a couple of early rises this week with contractors laying cable to the units here, but that part's done and I'm now waiting for the contractors who do the interior hookup (which hopefully leads directly to the "You're online; Congratulations!" part).

Warcraft time has started to come down a little as well, as I've leveled two characters to 80 so far, with a third getting close to 77 (and flight - with a crafted flying carpet waiting to be trialed), and my jewelcrafting rogue sitting pretty in Dalaran at level 72, doing the jewelcrafting dailies for more jc designs. But I'm starting to get burnt out with all this leveling, and I still haven't been able to decide what class I want to raid with - playing on my rogue just wasn't fun, and the tank I leveled is pretty much un-needed (the guild has a surplus for 25-mans), and the shadow priest I'm currently leveling is boring as heck to play.

Ah well, back to thinking about food (with some hogget roasting in the oven, making me hungry).

The calm before... [Nov. 8th, 2008|03:07 pm]

[music |Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee]

...well, before the continued addiction. Currently dabbling in Fallout 3 while I wait for the WoW expansion launch on Friday. (Fallout is a lot less painful than Oblivion was, and closer to the original two games than I was afraid it would be. Not perfect though, but still very playable)

WoW has slowed a great deal, and I'm desperately trying to build my gold balance back up after doing some last-minute gearing up of my Paladin.
I'll probably be attending the midnight release at ebgames at the mall nearby (well, I'd be awake then anyway so I thought it'd be something different to 'celebrate' the launch with), after which I get to start the 70-80 grind on my 6 70s (along with a Death Knight i'll be rolling once the rush in the DK starting zone cools down a little).

Current plan is to start with my raiding-rogue (Ringleprouse), then my alt-prot-warrior (Dinglemouse), maybe my bank-alt-rogue next (Pringlerouse), then spread my time between my hunter (Kringlelouse), paladin (Binglerouse) and priest (Mingledouse). Leveling won't be too much of a chore, but working through the new profession recipes will take a while - not to mention the time and gold to be invested in my miner/engineer (Dingle) in order to start gathering the mats required to make what will probably be the post-release status symbol mount (leather jacket not included):

Snap is proving better than Xnet was (which isn't really difficult), but it looks like I'll be moving (yet again) to cable with Telstraclear in about a month thanks to them finally getting permission to wire up the block of flats I live in. I've also been offered the first month free, which will cover the $100 charge for leaving Snap within 12 months of signing up so I won't be out of pocket on the deal, plus there's no contract with Telstra on the new connection. Just have to invest in a router to replace my adsl modem, as the cable modem only has one ethernet port and I'll need to connect both my pc and the VFX phone adapter to it.

I'm having more reason to shop with Ascent in future as well; my MX400 mouse has developed right-button issues, and when I contacted ascent about it, they can 'forward replace' it. Basically they send me a replacement (with no charge for shipping), and I send back the broken one I have after the replacement arrives (I pay for shipping it back). A very nice policy on their part.

Well, I'm feeling snack-ish, so time for another batch of roasted peanuts. (I'm not addicted; I can stop any time I want. Which would mean more if I actually wanted to stop ;)

Hopefully I'll be on my new ISP by Monday - Xnet is great, unless you try play online games after midnight (like I do). It'll be nice to see how Snap performs.

[music |The Beatles - Hey Jude]

Well, I've started the change-over process from Ihug/Vodafone to Xnet and will hopefully be enjoying more reliable internet "within three working days". Unfortunately this will probably mean I get to enjoy a bill for another month with ihug, as my next billing cycle with them happens in three working days.

But I've been unable to raid for the last couple of nights, and I've been planning on changing anyway, so WoW has forced my hand - just a little. Oh well, at least there's no contract or joining fee, should I decide to change again.

Also arranged (possibly) to get the council to do something about the poor state of the window frames in the flat, as the cold drafts over the weekend (I'd almost forgotten what winter is like) were quite unpleasant (and made it surprisingly difficult to heat the place). I'll hopefully hear something in the next couple of weeks about it, although there may be a delay if it's likely to be an expensive job and they need the ok from the housing officer in charge of these units.

[music |The Cadillacs - Speedo]

I think I've been given the best reason of all to switch my broadband off Vodihugafone (or whoever they are this week): I'm having trouble reaching some sites (the tracert output appears quite clear in whose network the problem seems to be located), and when I phoned them (with 25-minutes of looped muzak that bordered on the crazy-making) I was told that for them to look into it they would need both my user name and my password... Ok, I can accept that they'd need my username to lodge the issue under, but my password as well?

I think it's time to switch over to Xnet, regardless of their international speed issues.

The thing I dislike most about this time of year is... [Oct. 6th, 2007|12:40 pm]

[mood | irritated]
[music |Jive Five - What Time Is It]

*achoo*

The hayfever.

In a more non-temporally specific dislike, I also take umbrage at my isp (Ihug) repeatedly failing to accurately measure my traffic usage. I've been capped this morning (at about 80gb this month by the online usage tracker) but Netlimiter (a program that logs internet data usage on the computer, and was suggested by Ihug's tech support after a previous complaint about usage discrepancies) shows only about 68gb used. It's beginning to look like I need to invest in a new isp (probably Xnet) once the annoyance of not getting all the usage I pay for overcomes the pain of paying a $99 disconnection fee.

As an aside, start-of-the-day webcomic browsing takes forever when you can only load one page at a time.

Hopefully I'll be getting my R4DS cartridge ordered this week and delivered before I pick up the one I have on layby on the 17th. (It's been a while since I've been quite this enthusiastic and/or impatient)

WoW is taking a slow turn atm, and will probably get slower now the guild I belong to has decided to stop doing guild Kara runs and concentrate on the 25-mans. It's beginning to look like I might need a new guild as well. Time to level a new character to 70, perhaps?

I'm slowing building up a new backlog of video to watch as well, having discovered the anime Bleach, another more widely known anime called Naruto, as well as the new season of US shows (CSI NY, NCIS, Bones, House, Stargate Atlantis, Heroes, Robot Chicken and the Bionic Woman).

Oh well, back to my internet browsing - although perhaps 'limping' is more accurate at the moment.

[music |The KLF - Justified And Ancient]

Well, I've just received an email from Ihug which basically says "Whoops, our bad." Seems the email and speed reduction were caused by a software error on their system, and after resetting the modem I'm back up to speed.

Yay, fast internet days are here again.

Grrrr... [Jul. 28th, 2006|03:04 am]

[mood | annoyed]

Well, Ihug (my ISP) is beginning to lose my respect. I received an automated email from them about an hour ago, saying I'd gone over the 40gb off-peak limit for the month. That would be fine if there wasn't still a week and a half left before the end of the month. And if the online usage meter hadn't insisted I was still under 26gb so far (which it still reads). My on-peak usage has hit 29.99gb, and no warning email about that yet.

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes to get a reply to my email about this. (And to see what has actually happened) But pseudo-dialup speeds aren't fun at all.

Grrrr
